1990s FIFTH COLUMN ALTERNATIVE TENTACLES "NO MORE CENSORSHIP" T-SHIRT
Details
Extremely rare shirt printed some time in the early 1990s by Fifth Column (London screen-printing studio known for their iconic contributions to punk history though graphic design and pioneering approaches to print) featuring their super soft, natural cotton World-T blank and satin neck-tag.
Earlier iterations of this shirt were issued to raise legal funds during the Frankenchrist obscenity trial, when Alternative Tentacles was prosecuted over the inclusion of H. R. Giger’s “Work 219: Landscape XX” as a fold-out poster inside the Dead Kennedys’ third LP, despite a warning sticker on the shrink-wrap. Fronted by Jello Biafra, the case was a critical juncture for debates around censorship and artistic freedom in the US, with fans’ donations and merch like this helping the label cover legal costs and avoid bankruptcy even years after the trail ended in their favour.
